3 Reasons Why Himalayan Salt Counts as a Gourmet Food
You don’t have to be a gourmet chef to create gourmet meals. All it takes is a little Himalayan salt!
Even if you’re not a gourmet chef, you can appreciate the work and talent that goes into a gourmet meal. There is a big difference between “eating” and “dining”, and if you have a gourmet palate, you’re probably always on the lookout for things that can take your food to the next level.
Here’s why Himalayan salt falls into that category:
1. It’s as pure as it gets
When you think “gourmet”, you probably don’t think of over-processed foods that have been stripped of basically all of their nutritional value. Instead, you probably think of something that’s pure, healthy, and has plenty of natural flavor.
And that’s exactly what you get from Himalayan salt!
You may remember from history class that the earth used to be completely covered by oceans. When those oceans dried up hundreds of millions of years ago, caves full of crystal salt were exposed. The end result? Pink Himalayan salt. The pink color comes from the combination of minerals inside the salt. (It’s very different from white table salt, which gets its color from stripping away all of those minerals!) The Himalayan salt you see today is exactly the same as the stuff that was uncovered 250 million years ago. Consider it to be nature’s gourmet gift!
2. It’s got a richer flavor
Eat a pinch of table salt, and it will taste well salty. However, Himalayan salt crystals have a richer, earthier taste to them. As a result, you don’t have to use as much of them to season your foods.
That richer flavor has one more big benefit, though. It enhances other flavors. That’s why you’ll see these crystals sprinkled on everything from guacamole, to chocolate, to caramel apples. Instead of tasting the salt — or having your meal overpowered by the salt — you get a bolder experience from all of the other flavors.
3. It’s great for presentation
Let’s face it, no one wants to eat a meal that doesn’t LOOK appetizing! Like it or not, presentation is an important part of gourmet cooking, and nothing looks cooler on a plate than Himalayan salt!
Why?
Its crystals are larger than what you’ll find in a regular salt shaker. So, you’ll really be able to see the texture before you take a bite. Plus, Himalayan salt comes with that unique pink hue, which serves as a great contrast to many ingredients. For example, imagine it sprinkled on top of a seared steak, over a platter of soft cheeses, or on top of a chocolate truffle. No matter what you sprinkle it over, your meal will instantly go from “ordinary” to “extraordinary”!
