Food Grade Salt
If you’ve tried them, you’re already familiar with the wonderful flavor our gourmet salt products bring to your favorite dishes. What you might not know, though, is that all of the salt used in both our gourmet products, all of our bath & body products, and each therapeutic product comes from our inspected food grade facility, while our lamps, candle holders and other decorative products are produced in an adjacent, separate, facility specializing in decorative crafts. We sample each lot of food grade salt used in both the bath & body and gourmet products and have it analyzed and certified for content to ensure we can guarantee our standards of quality and safety in both of these product categories.
What this means, in short, is that whether you buy our gourmet products or our bath products, you’re receiving salt from a hygienic environment, and can use either product type both against your skin or for edible consumption. Each of our handcrafted products that includes our fair trade Himalayan salt, such as deodorant powders, soaks, or tooth powders, also makes use of only food grade salt.
So whether you’re in the market for a gourmet salt product, one of our bath & body or therapy products, keep in mind that they are both versatile in their uses. For example, you could purchase a 55 lbs. package of coarse or fine salt and use it in both the bathroom and the kitchen.

Your new Himalayan salt platter can be used as a tasteful and delicious way to prepare and serve your favorite foods. Before you get started, though, it’s important to take the correct steps to temper or prepare your platter for use with hot dishes.
Use with Cold Foods
Using your Himalayan salt platter to serve or prepare cold foods is a much simpler process. There is no need for heat tempering here. Simply place the Himalayan salt platter in the freezer for roughly an hour before serving your fruits, vegetables, salads, chocolates or desserts.
While a Himalayan salt platter adds a special touch to any dessert, it particularly complements foods with a tangy zest to them. Try using it as a serving platter for this margarita ice cream! You can even take things a step further by pairing with tequila shots served in our Himalayan salt shot glasses.
Use with Hot Foods
When using your salt platter to cook hot foods, take care to increase the temperature of your oven, grill or barbeque step by step, just as you did in the tempering process. Take note, though, that now only 5 minutes of wait time are required between each temperature level.
Once your salt platter has reached the desired temperature, you can place your food directly on the tile, which will simultaneously season, cook and sear your food.
Grilling or searing meat on your salt block can add a delicious flavor, but it works well with vegetable dishes too, like this Himalayan salt block asparagus recipe.
If using a glass-topped or electric stove, it’s important to use a secondary item, such as a pie tin or wok ring to place under the salt platter and ensure it’s at least ½ inch off of the heating element. When using a barbeque, heat regulation will be trickier, so take care to bring the heat of the platter up slowly. Finally, when cooking over a gas flame on a stove, begin by heating the salt platter on low heat for fifteen minutes and then moving to medium heat. Once you’ve made the switch to medium heat, you should be ready to begin cooking.
Tempering
Tempering your salt platter before its first heated use is important to ensure safety and lasting quality of the product. Luckily, tempering is a very simple process. Before you use the platter for any cooking or grilling, complete the following steps:
Place the salt platter on the bottom rack of your oven and set the oven to its lowest heat setting (this will typically be somewhere between 130-170 degrees Fahrenheit).
Once the oven has reached its lowest heat setting, allow the salt platter to remain at this temperature for approximately 30 minutes.
Begin increasing the temperature of the oven by roughly 50 degrees at a time. Once the oven has heated to each new setting, allow the salt platter to sit at that temperature for approximately 30 minutes.
Once the temperature of your oven has reached 550 degrees, shut the oven off and leave the door closed. Allow the oven to cool down to room temperature over time, and then remove the salt platter, which is now ready for use.
Please note that it’s normal for the salt platter to develop cracks or make popping and cracking noises while tempering.
Care & Cleaning Instructions
After using your salt platter for cooking, you can use the edge of a knife or a fine brush to scrape off any residual oils, fats or grease. Then rinse the platter in warm water without soap, and leave it in a warm, dry place for at least 24 hours.
If you’ve been using the salt platter either to serve fruits and vegetables or as a cutting board, simply wipe it clean with a moist towel and then allow it to dry for 24 hours. No soap is necessary.
Over time, the surface of your salt platter may begin to show wear, divots or unevenness from use. In the event that this occurs, you can use a fine sandpaper to smooth the platter by removing its top layer.

Himalayan salt platters are good for more than just displaying your tasty treats. In fact, cooking on Himalayan salt is fun, and it makes your finished product taste even better! Take a look at these tips and facts before you start cooking to ensure you’re getting the most out of your Himalayan salt platter. Make a full meal, or turn a basic appetizer into an unforgettable experience. After all, why use a plain serving tray when you can serve on a dramatic-looking salt platter?
You’ll Wind Up Imparting a Salty Seasoning
Cooking on Himalayan salt is a great way to inject more flavor into your foods because some of the salt will naturally rub off onto whatever you’re cooking. You’ll want to be careful not to over-salt your food, though. If you’ve got foods that are moist — like steaks and vegetables — cut those thinly before you place them on a Himalayan salt platter. That way, they can cook quickly, before they have a chance to take on too much salt.
Tap Into the Power of Oil
If you’ve got food that simply can’t be sliced and you still want to cook it on Himalayan salt, oil can be extremely helpful. By pouring a thin layer onto your Himalayan salt platter first, you’ll create a buffer between the food and the salt. As an added benefit, the oil will make your Himalayan salt platters easier to clean later.
It’s Perfect for Seafood
If you want to really enjoy shrimp, scallops, and other small pieces of seafood, cook them on Himalayan salt. The salt will get into your seafood during the cooking process, giving you a meal that tastes fresh from the sea.
You’re Not Limited to Hot Cooking
Sure, a good Himalayan salt platter will be able to withstand sitting on top of your grill or gas range (if you’re using an electric grill, place a wok ring — or something similarly-shaped — underneath the salt so that it doesn’t sit directly on the burner). However, these slabs are just as effective in your freezer. They’ll give you a quick, easy way to freeze homemade ice cream, and the presentation you’ll get to make when you’re ready for dessert will be dramatic and enjoyable!
Don’t want to expend that much energy? Instead, place raw vegetables, sushi, or other appetizers onto a Himalayan salt platter that’s been chilled in the fridge. Since these slabs can retain a chill for several hours, they’re perfect for serving up things that need to be cold!
Be Sure to Temper Your Platter Before the First Use
Whether you’re on the grill or the stove, Himalayan salt platters need to be heated gradually so that they don’t crack. Yes, this means cooking on Himalayan salt takes a little longer at first, but the finished product is well worth it.
